Cross Country Members: Coach John Brummitt, Jeff Green, Joel Williams, Bethany Coats
Coats Shines at Cross Country Nationals November 14, 2011 Cedarville, Ohio. Bethany Coats completed her first collegiate cross country season with a trip to the National Christian College Athletic Association’s National Meet over the weekend. She completed the 3.1 mile course in a time of 22:59. “Beth did well in the National meet this past weekend, placing 10th in Division II” said Coach John Brummitt. “I am extremely proud of Beth. She is a tough runner and got stronger as the season progressed. No matter what was asked of her this season, she did it, without complaining or offering up excuses. There are not many runners out there that can take hard workouts day after day and still show up ready to go.” Due to a recent injury, Joel Williams was unable to participate at the national meet.
Flames Runners Win at KCU
October 28, 2011. Grayson, KY On a cold and rainy Friday, Free Will Baptist Bible College’s cross country runners competed in the Kentucky Christian University invitational. Steady rain, temperatures in the mid-30s, and a soggy course impacted the race. Ten women’s teams and 11 men’s teams participated. Many were NAIA and NCCAA, Division 1 institutions. In the women’s race, Bethany Coats lined up with 39 other women to run the 3.1 mile course. Coats ran a steady race and finished 6th overall, but finished first among NCCAA, Division 2 runners. She completed the course in a time of 23:22. The five girls that finished ahead of her were from NCCAA Division 1, Asbury University. Conditions didn't improve for the men's race, but that didn't stop FWBBC's Joel Williams from taking first place. With a time of 28:51 in the five-mile race, Williams outdistanced 51 other runners. The next closest runner was at least six seconds behind Williams. He has won both NCCAA Division 2 meets he competed in this fall. "The conditions were unbelievable," said Gary Turner, FWBBC athletic director (subbing for Coach John Brummitt who had a prior commitment with his full-time job). "Joel and Beth did a great job staying focused. An almost six-hour trip up to KCU and terrible weather conditions could have been a real problem, but they put everything out of their minds and ran. They did an amazing job."
FWBBC Cross Country Teams in Union University Meet October 3, 2011. The Flames traveled Jackson, Tennessee, and competed in the Union University Invitational. In the women’s race, Bethany Coates finished the 5k in 16th place with a time of 22:17, an improvement of 2:40 over her last race. “If she had run this time at the Johnson meet, she would have won with a minute to spare,” said Coach John Brummitt. In the men’s race, Joel Williams continued his excellent running with a fifth-place finish in the 8k race with a time of 27:15. That was a 1:18 improvement over his Vanderbilt finish. Jeff Green finished 28th in his first 8k race with a time of 34:54. “Jeff has shown a great deal of improvement,” said Coach Brummitt. “Comparing Saturday’s time to the Johnson meet, he has knocked four minutes off his time.” Williams Wins First-Ever Cross Country Meet and Breaks Course Record Knoxville, TN. September 9, 2011. The Free Will Baptist Bible College inaugural cross country teams got off to an outstanding start at Johnson University. With only two men and one woman competing, FWBBC could not record team scores, but as individuals, they ran and represented the college. Freshman Joel Williams led the way for the Flames. The Carthage, Missouri, student won the men’s four mile event with a time of 23:20, outdistancing the second place collegian by a minute and a half. The second Flames’ runner, Jeff Green, finished 12th, with a time of 31:15. On the women’s side, Bethany Coats finished third in the 5k with a time of 24:57. “I am extremely proud of our team,” said Coach John Brummitt. “In our first-ever cross country meet, Joel Williams set a new course record at Johnson, and Beth Coats ran a great race. This is an excellent start to our season. Our program is still in the beginning stages but is already showing great results. I am looking forward to the rest of the season and developing our runners.” FWBBC Adds Cross Country Cross Country is now a varsity sport at Free Will Baptist Bible College. After a year of anticipation and preparation, FWBBC begins a new era for the Flames. Two men and one woman are participating in ground-level activities to launch the exciting new program. The men’s team is composed of Joel Williams and Jeff Green. Bethany Coats runs for the women’s team. “Training has been more intense than the students thought it would be,” said Coach John Brummitt. “They have taken to it without complaint. This season will be a learning experience for all of us, but I do think we will perform well.” Brummitt is excited about the future of Flames’ Cross Country and is already working on recruitment and raising campus awareness about opportunities for those who like to run.
August 31, 2010 FWBBC to Add Cross Country in 2011
NASHVILLE, TN—Free Will Baptist Bible College will be adding cross country as an intercollegiate varsity sport in the fall of 2011, according to Gary Turner, athletic director. Both men’s and women’s cross country will be offered. FWBBC currently has baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, and volleyball as intercollegiate sports. “As we look to the future for athletics, this is the next logical step for us,” Mr. Turner said. “We are starting golf this fall, and cross country will fit right in with our plans to expand varsity athletic programs. We can add cross country without adding facilities. We hope to attract a number of Free Will Baptist student-athletes who already run cross country in high school and who wish to participate in varsity athletics at the college level.” Recruiting for the fall of 2011 has already begun, and the search for a new coach is underway. High school athletes who are interested in running on a college cross country team are asked to contact FWBBC’s athletic director, Gary Turner, at gturner@fwbbc.edu, or call him at 615-844-5276.
