Ohio Christian University 3; FWBBC 0 (25-13; 25-10; 25-12)

Johnson University 3; FWBBC 0 (25-13; 25-10; 25-15)

October 31, 2011.  Over the weekend, the Lady Flames’ volleyball team traveled to Johnson University to compete in the Mid-East Region Tournament.

FWBBC dropped the first match in straight sets, 25-13, 25-10, 25-12 to Ohio Christian University.  Rachel Burns finished with seven digs, Christen Pointer with five kills, and Emily Whitworth with four assists.

In the second match, the team played better against Johnson University, but still came up short: 25-13, 25-10, 25-15.  It was a good effort by the Flames, especially after Whitworth went down with an injury in the second set.

“The girls never gave up, in spite of the good offense by JU,” said Coach Amy Walker.  “They have been a good group to work with, and I think we can build off what we have since we are so young.”

Flames Drop Final Home Matches

Appalachian Bible College 3; FWBBC 0 (25-15; 27-25; 25-15)

There was a great turnout Thursday evening for “Pink Night” at Picirilli Gym to acknowledge breast cancer survivors and solicit donations for breast cancer research.  This is an annual event and the Flames’ fans are very supportive.

Despite being swept in three games, the Flames played hard. While games one and three were one-sided, game two was a barn-burner as the Flames came up just short, losing 27-25.  In game two, Rachel Burns had a season best 25 digs.

“Overall the girls pushed themselves defensively. (It shows in our digging stats.),” said Coach Amy Walker.  “Emily and Christen played hard at the net, frustrating their hitters.”

In addition to Burns’ 25 digs, Emily Whitworth had an impressive night with 12 kills while Christen Pointer finished with nine assists.

Kentucky Christian University 3; FWBBC 0 (25-18; 25-8; 25-6)

In the Flames’ final home match, they competed against Kentucky Christian University, the nation’s third-ranked team.  FWBBC came out of the gate strong and put up a good fight in game one.  But they couldn’t sustain the effort and fell to the Trailblazers in three straight.

“The girls never quit,” said Coach Walker.  “I am proud of how they rallied together after Emily went down near the end of the third set.”

Rachel Burns led the Flames with 11 digs. Christen Pointer had six kills and Emily Whitworth six assists.

Flames Struggle at Crown

The Crown College 3; FWBBC 0 ( 25-14; 25-15; 25-8)

October 15, 2011.  The Lady Flames hung in with Crown the first two sets of their match but couldn’t finish strong and bowed to the Evangels in three straight, 25-14, 25-15, 25-8.

“We played really well the first two sets,” said Flames coach Amy Walker.   “The score doesn't reflect how good we looked in those two.  But we started making mental errors and careless mistakes in the third game, and Crown capitalized on them.”

Emily Whitworth played big at the net and led the Flames.  “Even Crown's coach mentioned her to me after the game,” added Walker.

Statistically, Whitworth led the team with five assists.  She was also second with three kills and six digs.

Volleyball Drops Two

Crown College 3; FWBBC 0 (25-11; 25-5; 25-10)

Ohio Christian University 3; FWBBC 0 (25-23; 25-17; 25-20)

October 3, 2011.  The Flames’ woes continued over the weekend as they dropped a pair of Mid-East Region games to Crown College and Ohio Christian University.

Friday, the Flames came out flat and never recovered as the Royal Crusaders easily swept the match.

“I don’t know where we were tonight,” said Coach Amy Walker.  “We couldn’t seem to do anything.”

Saturday’s match was much closer as FWBBC started out much stronger and stayed consistent throughout the match. But, in the end, it was too much OCU.

“We did a much better job today,” said Coach Walker.  “I thought we did a nice job maintaining our intensity level after the way we played last night.  I was proud of the way the girls scrapped for balls.”

Christen Pointer led the Flames Saturday with seven kills and six blocks; Emily Whitworth with 11 digs and eight assists; Rachel Burns with 11 digs; and Katie Duttine with eight aces

The Flames second match was much closer as they fell in five games to Hiwassee College.  FWBBC won the first and third games, but lost the second, fourth and fifth games.

The Flames led early in game one and looked ready to take an easy win, but the Lady Tigers clawed back to make it a contest before the Flames pulled away.  Game two went back and forth as Hiwassee made a late run to win 25-19.  FWBBC regained the advantage by winning game three, 25-20.  But the Flames couldn’t maintain the momentum, and the Lady Tigers finished the match by winning games four and five.

Rachel Burns and Emily Whitworth led the way for the Flames with 10 kills each.  Burns also had five aces.  Elizabeth Hill had 10 digs, and Whitworth and Christen Pointer had 19 and 16 assists, respectively.

“We had our chances,” said a disappointed Coach Amy Walker.  “We must find a way to finish off matches like this.  We had the momentum and just couldn’t close it out.”

FWBBC Falls to Johnson University

Johnson University 3; FWBBC 0 (25-11; 25-13; 25-11)

September 16, 2011.  The trip to Knoxville was unproductive as the Evangels easily handled the Flames in three games, 25-11; 25-13; 25-11.

“It was a frustrating night for us,” said a disappointed Coach Amy Walker.  “We just didn’t get the job done, and we are definitely better than we played tonight.”

Tennessee Temple University 3; FWBBC 0 (25-12; 25-12; 25-12)

September 10, 2011.  The Flames were hoping that their first home match would turn their season around and get them on a winning streak.  But it was not to be as they fell in three straight games by identical 25-12 scores.

“We did not play our best,” said a disappointed Coach Amy Walker.  “We could never seem to get into our rhythm.  We played catch-up the whole time.”

Flames Lose in Five

Pointe University 3; FWBBC 2 (22-25; 17-25; 25-18; 25-22; 15-10)

September 6, 2011.  The Flames traveled to Atlanta to take on Pointe University and came away with a disappointing five-game loss.

The Flames were hot early and jumped to a quick two-game lead.  But they cooled off in game three and lost 25-18.  Game four bounced back and forth before the Sky Hawks prevailed 25-22.  Pointe got the early lead in game five to pull away with the game and match.

Rachel Burns led the Lady Flames with eight kills. Christen Pointer and Emily Whitworth had 12 digs each, and Elizabeth Hill notched 10 digs and eight aces.

“I thought we had them,” said Coach Amy Walker.  “We just need to get that first win under our belts. We played well enough to do it tonight.  I continue to be pleased with our effort.”

Flames Lose Close One

Hiwassee 3; FWBBC 1 (25-19; 15-25; 25-23; 25-22)

September 3, 2011.  The Flames came out of the gate slowly Saturday at Hiwassee and dropped the first game of the match to Hiwassee College 25-19.  They turned things around in game two with fine net play and won 25-15.  The rest of the match came down to Hiwassee winning the “big” points and taking the match.

“We overcame a number of obstacles in this match,” said Flames coach Amy Walker.  “The girls stayed focused most of the time, but let two Hiwassee players outdo us with their serves. I was proud of our enthusiasm tonight. We will be ready when they come to our place.”

The Flames were led by Rachel Burns with eight kills, Emily Whitworth with 11 assists, and Katie Duttine with eight aces.  Burns added seven digs while Whitworth and Duttine each had six.
