Game SummariesASSOCIATED FREE LUTHERAN BIBLE COLLEGE 71, FWBBC 70 Bethany, Oklahoma March 6, 2010. The ACCA National Tournament's 5th place game turned into a real barn burner as Associated Free Lutheran Bible College defeated Free Will Baptist Bible College 71-70 early Saturday afternoon.
For the first 15 minutes of the game it was a back and forth affair as neither team could mount any kind of a scoring attack. But late in the first half, the Conquerors went on a mini-run by knocking down a pair of three's to take a 36-29 lead into the intermission.
AFLBC continued to add to their lead, pushing it to double digits, early in the second half. The Flames chipped away at the lead a couple of times, but could never get closer than five. Each time they gained a few points, the Conquerors would get the lead back into double digits.
Trailing by five with under a minute remaining, Brandon Wade knocked down a trey to draw FWBBC to within two. On the Flames' next possession, Wade drove the lane, scored the bucket to tie the game, and went to the line for a chance to put FWBBC in the lead. Wade dropped in the free throw and the Flames led 70-69 with 10 seconds left in regulation.
The Conquerors took the ball the length of the court and drove in the lane. Although David Landers appeared to be set (for a charge), he was whistled for a block as the ball went through the hoop. With four seconds left, the missd free throw was fumbled around and went out of bounds with possession going to AFLBC. They inbounded the ball and the game ended.
Wade led all scorers with 35 points. Chris Davenport added 13 points and David Landers recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Adam Gardner pulled down a season-high 13 rebounds while Wade had 5 steals.
The Flames end their season at 12-22. FWBBC 76, ARLINGTON BAPTIST COLLEGE 69 Bethany, OK March 5, 2010. Defense! Defense! Defense! After giving up 40 first half points and 19 more through the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Flames put the clamps on the Patriots offense and held them to just seven points over a nine minute stretch to defeat Arlington Baptist College 76-69.
After a see-saw first half with ABC leading by as many as five points, Coach Nathan Willhite’s Flames came out after the half-time and had an 8-0 run, only to see it disappear as the Patriots made a run of their own and took a 59-57 lead at the 10 minute mark. That is when the Flame’s defense went to work. Over the next eight minutes, FWBBC outscored ABC 10-2, to boost the Flames lead to 10.
Four Flames scored in double figures led by Brandon Wade’s 30 points and four steals. David Landers added 13 points and six steals, while Kevin Murray chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Davenport rounded out the double-digit scoring with 11points.
Now 12-21, the Flames play for fifth place tomorrow at 11:30am. BARCLAY COLLEGE 89, FWBBC 61 Bethany, Oklahoma March 4, 2010. The game started out well, but the Flames weren’t able to hang with the Bears and fell 89-61 in the opening round of the ACCA National Basketball Tournament. With five minutes gone, it was a one-point game, but Barclay took over from there, outscoring the Flames by 19 to take a 20-point advantage into the locker room. The Flames played better the second half, but were still outscored by eight to give the Bears the win. “We started out all right,” said Coach Nathan Willhite. “They are a good team and we weren’t able to convert shots when we had the opportunities.” Brandon Wade led the Flames with 25 points and David Landers chipped in 15. Adam Gardner pulled down nine rebounds. OHIO CHRISTIAN 86, FWBBC 59 Knoxville, TN February 26, 2010. Ohio Christian University showed why they are deserving of a #3 national ranking by The National Christian College Athletic Association as they handily defeated Free Will Baptist Bible College 86-59 in their Mid-East Regional matchup Saturday. The Flames were only able to hang with the Trailblazers for a few minutes before a 27-11 run put OCU in front for good. The Trailblazers continued to put the pressure on and extended their lead to 23 as both teams went to the locker room. In the second half, the Flames could get no closer than 17. Once again FWBBC was led in scoring by Brandon Wade with 27 points. The only other Flame in double figures was Chris Davenport with 11. Kevin Murray, David Landers, and Adam Gardner each pulled down seven boards to lead the Flames. With an overall record of 11-20, the Flames travel to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to play in the Association of Christian College Athletics' national tournament. Action begins Thursday and continues through Saturday.
FREE WILL BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE 70, BOYCE COLLEGE 57 Knoxville,TN February 25, 2010. It is always hard to beat a team three times in a season. Although the game wasn't pretty, Free Will Baptist Bible College pulled away late to do that as they defeated Boyce College 70-57 in the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association's Mid-East Region Tournament held at Johnson Bible College. The Flames won both regular season games, but the January 22nd game took an overtime period to be decided. It was a typical first-round playoff game. Both teams played tight and turnovers were the name of the game early on. In typical fashion, the Flames made a first half run to go up by 10, only to allow the Bulldogs to make a run of their own and get back in the game. The Flames headed to the locker room with a six point lead at the intermission. The second half was a back-and-forth affair with the Flames holding a slim seven point lead with five minutes left in regulation. FWBBC stayed strong defensively and didn't allow the Bulldogs back in the game as they pulled away at the end for the 13-point margin. "It was an ugly start for us," said Flames coach Nathan Willhite. "I was really happy that we were able to stay focused when the pressure was on in the second half. We didn't allow them to make a second half run and that should help us tomorrow night." Leading the way for the Flames was Kevin Murray as he recorded his sixth double-double in their last seven games. Murray scored 21 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Brandon Wade led FWBBC in scoring and had a well-rounded night with 25 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, and six steals. Chris Davenport and David Landers also scored in double figures with 10 apiece. Landers also had five assists, five steals, and three blocked shots for the Flames. Tonight the #3-seeded Flames play the #2 seed, Ohio Christian University, at 6:00 p.m. EST in Knoxville.
FREE WILL BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE 87, APPALACHIAN BIBLE COLLEGE 40 Nashville, TN February 19, 2010. Senior Kevin Murray saved his best for last. Appearing in his last home game in a Flames uniform, the 6’2” forward scored 17 points and pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds to lead Free Will Baptist Bible College to an 87-40 blowout of Appalachian Bible College. The rout was on early as the Flames built a 28-11 lead midway through the first half and allowed the Warriors only four more points in the remaining 10 minutes to take a commanding 49-15 lead into intermission. Flames’ coach Nathan Willhite went to the bench early in the second half and played his reserves for much of the rest of the game. It didn’t seem to matter as the Flames still outscored the Warriors by 13 in the period. “It was a great way for Kevin to go out,” said Willhite. “He has been such a vital part of our program for the last four years. He has represented FWBBC well and he will be missed.” In addition to Murray’s double-double, four other Flames scored in double figures and one joined him in double figure rebounds. Brandon Wade had a team-high 19 points, David Landers added 17, and Matt Wright chipped in 11. Adam Gardner scored 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Coming off the bench to lead the team in assists was Stephen Nelson, with eight. Wade picked up four steals for the Flames. FWBBC finishes the regular season with a 10-19 record. They travel to Knoxville for the Mid-East Region Tournament next Thursday-Saturday.
RHODES COLLEGE 91, FREE WILL BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE 68 Memphis, TN February 15, 2010. Digging out of a hole is nothing unusual for FWBBC, but this time it was just too deep as the Flames had 18 first half turnovers in their loss to Rhodes College 91-68. Rhodes came out in a trapping zone defense and the pressure was too much for the Flames, as they turned the ball over time after time. FWBBC was also feeling the effects of the road trip and their eighth game in 12 days, as they were down 47-23 at the half. The Flames came out in the second half and cut the Lynx lead to 16 and played relatively even the rest of the game, but it was too big of a deficit to overcome. “We were just flat,” said Flames coach Nathan Willhite. “We need all five guys to be more active when we are being pressured, and there was too much standing around. I also think our guards need to be more aware of their surroundings when teams are pressing us.” Once again, Brandon Wade led the Flames with 31 points followed by David Landers’ 13 points. Landers led the Flames with eight rebounds while Kevin Murray pulled down seven. Aaron Pierce dished out five assists to lead FWBBC. Now 9-18, the Flames play their final regular season game on Friday when they host Appalachian Bible College at 7:00pm.
FREE WILL BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE 79, CROWN COLLEGE 65 Nashville, TN February 13, 2010. Playing their seventh game in 10 days, the Flames had to dig deep against Mid-East Region opponent Crown College. Losing to the Royal Crusaders by four points two weeks ago just added to their intensity level and it showed as they defeated Crown 79-65. The game was played pretty physically as both teams vied for offensive position. Iit was not until the second half when shots started to fall for the Flames and they were able to take a one point half-time lead and turn it into a 14-point victory. The first half was somewhat of a see-saw battle. Crown took the early seven-point advantage, but the aggressive Flames stormed back to go in front 32-31 at the half. The second half turned into the Wade-Landers show. Brandon Wade scored from the outside and David Landers dominated the paint. Wade scored 19 of his game-high 31 points (including three treys) and Landers added 13 second half points to finish with 17. "I was really pleased with our effort tonight," said Flames coach Nathan Willhite. "It was an important region game for us because it would impact our seeding in the (Mid-East Region) tournament." With the win, FWBBC locked up the third seed. In addition to Wade and Landers, Kevin Murray and Chris Davenport were also in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Landers led the Flames in rebounds with eight while Murray and Wade added seven each. There is no rest for the 9-17 Flames as they travel to Memphis today (Monday) to play Rhodes College. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
WARREN WILSON COLLEGE 86, FREE WILL BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE 75 Nashville, TN February 12, 2010. The largest home crowd of the year was treated to an exciting game last night, but came away a little disappointed as their Flames lost to Warren Wilson College 86-75. Although the outcome wasn’t what they had hoped for, the enthusiastic “Blue Out Night” crowd helped to keep the Flames in the game with their vocal support. “It was great to see such a large crowd tonight,” said Flames coach Nathan Willhite. “They always add a lot to our games.” For the third straight game, FWBBC was able to stay with their opponent for most of the first half, only to see the deficit balloon to double digits after the intermission. Although Warren Wilson was able to push the lead to 11 while gaining momentum, the Flames weren’t about to give up. With 10:45 left in the game, Brandon Wade hit a runner to bring FWBBC back to within four at 56-52. But that is as close as they would get as the Owls knocked down three treys in less than a minute to put the lead back at 10. Once again, the game ended at the free throw line as the Flames had to foul to try and get the ball back. The Owls scored their last 18 points from the line to pick up the win. Four Flames scored in double figures led by Brandon Wade’s 29. David Landers added 13, Matt Wright and Kevin Murray chipped in 11 and 10, respectively. Wade also led FWBBC with 11 rebounds and five assists. There is no rest for the 8-17 Flames as they host The Crown College today at Picirilli Activities Center in a Mid-East Region contest. In their last meeting, the Flames lost 81-77. Game time is set for 3:00pm.
CHAMPION BAPTIST COLLEGE 66, FREE WILL BAPTIST BIBLE COLLEGE 56 Nashville, TN February 11, 2010. The defense was there, but the FWBBC offense couldn’t buy a bucket as they fell to visiting Champion Baptist College 66-56. Once again the Flames' pressure defense forced their opponents into taking ill-advised shots and the Tigers shot only 27% from the floor in the first half. FWBBC was unable to capitalize on the offensive end and CBC headed to the locker room at half-time holding a slim 25-23 lead. In the second half, the Tigers heated up and extended their lead to 11 points early in the period, and it looked like the Flames were in danger of getting blown out. But FWBBC was determined to make it a game and made a run of its own. At the 10:15 mark, the Flames pulled to within two points. From that point on, it was a back-and-forth contest until the closing seconds of the game when the Flames had to foul to get the ball back. The Tigers calmly stepped up and made six straight free throws to seal the victory. Leading the way for the Flames once again was Brandon Wade with a team-high 26 points. Kevin Murray picked up his fourth double-double in his last five games with 10 points and 17 rebounds. The Flames, now 8-16, host Warren Wilson tonight at 7:00pm. Come and cheer your team to victory!
FWBBC 77, JOHNSON BIBLE COLLEGE 68 Nashville, TN February 8, 2010. Free Will Baptist Bible College played Johnson Bible College twice within six days. The location changed but the result was the same as the host Flames defeated the Preachers 77-68. It was a battle from start to finish. Early on it looked like FWBBC was going to pull away for an easy win. But, the visiting Preachers scored three quick baskets and actually took the lead midway through the first half. Then, the Flames turned up the heat, defensively, and made a run of their own to go out front for good. In the second half, the FWBBC lead hoverd around ten points and the Preachers continued to make it a game. Although it was a nice lead, there was always the feeling that there might be a JBC comeback. In the end, however, it was the Flames quickness that was able to stifle the Preachers' scoring opportunities and secure the win. "I thought our intensity was there tonight," said Flames Coach Nathan Willhite. "We took some ill-advised shots too early on several possessions, but overall, I thought we handled ourselves pretty well." Once again it was the Flames' defense that came up big as they held JBC under 70 points. In all but one of FWBBC's wins this season, they have held their opponents in the 60s or less. Kevin Murray had his fourth double-double in his last five games with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Brandon Wade led the team in scoring with 24 points and Chris Davenport was also in double figures with 15. David Landers pulled down 10 rebounds for the Flames. Now 8-15 (3-4 in the Mid-East Region), FWBBC will host Champion Baptist College on Thursday night at 7:00pm; Warren Wilson College on Friday at 7:00pm; and The Crown College on Saturday at 3:00pm. It should be a great weekend of basketball with spirit week. There will be extra activities on Friday and Saturday. Come support the Flames!
FWBBC 51, TRINITY BAPTIST COLLEGE 46 Nashville, TN February 4, 2010. What a night! It didn't seem to matter to the Flames that the Eagles showed up early and the officials didn't show up at all as they pulled out a squeaker, defeating Trinity Baptist College 51-46. Trinity arrived at Picirilli Activities Center at 4:00pm so that they could loosen up and get some shooting in before the scheduled 7:00pm tipoff. But, they would have been better off coming later as the game officials were a no-show. Flames’ Coach Nathan Willhite was able to get a couple of local officials to work the game, but it was delayed approximately 95 minutes. When the game finally started, it turned into a battle. It became a very physical contest, which tends to work against FWBBC. But the Flames were able to hold their ground early on and take a slim 24-21 half-time lead. The second half was much the same as the first half with the lead going back and forth and neither team able to gain more than a five point advantage. With 22.2 seconds left in regulation, Brandon Wade, making the first of two free throws, put the Flames up three, 49-46. His second shot missed the mark, but the Flames were able to rebound the miss and Chris Davenport drew the foul. Davenport calmly went to the line and drained both charity tosses to extend the lead to five. The Eagles brought the ball up, but a three-point attempt hit off the rim and the Flames rebounded the ball to end the game. “What a night!” said Willhite. “We have never had refs not show up before. I was fortunate to be able to find two available and willing to come on such short notice. I am thankful to (Trinity) Coach Milligan for being so patient in such a tough situation. It could have gotten ugly, but everything worked out okay in the end.” David Landers led the Flames with 19 points. Brandon Wade added 18 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Davenport also pulled down 10 rebounds. Now 7-14, the Flames travel to Ashville, NC, to play Warren Wilson tonight and will be home again on Monday to host Johnson Bible College.
FWBBC 71, JOHNSON BIBLECOLLEGE 63 Knoxville, TN February 2, 2010. FWBBC took an early eight point lead against Johnson Bible College last night and that margin was enough as the Flames handed JBC a 71-63 loss on the Saints’ home floor. Although FWBBC never trailed in the game, JBC was able to keep the game within reach the entire game. So, it boiled down to whether or not the Flames could make free throws at the end. Even though they have struggled most of the season from the line, they were able to convert seven of nine free throws in the last two minutes, capped off by Chris Davenport’s two crucial ones to make it a two-possession game with under a minute to play. The Saints were unable to come up with any baskets and the Flames pulled out the win. “Our defense was outstanding as we held them under 70 points tonight,” said Flames coach Nathan Willhite. “I was also pleased with the way the guys handled the pressure down the stretch and were able to make their free throws. We are definitely making progress.” Kevin Murray had his third double-double in a row with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Brandon Wade just missed a triple-double as he led the Flames in scoring with 25 points and pulled down nine rebounds and dished out nine assists. Davenport and David Landers just missed double-doubles as well as they each scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds. The Flames are now 6-14 on the season and host Trinity Baptist College at 7:00pm on Thursday.
FWBBC 95, APPALACHIAN BIBLE COLLEGE 65 Bradley, WV January 30, 2010. Venturing through the snow and cold didn’t seem to slow down the Flames as they ran past Appalachian Bible College 95-65 on the Warriors home floor. FWBBC started out a little sluggish and allowed ABC to keep the opening frame in single digits. But, late in the first half, a Brandon Wade jumper gave FWBBC a 47-34 lead to close out the first half. The second half was all Flames as they maintained their intensity and executed well on both ends of the floor to take the 30 point win. They were even able to get the job done at the free throw line, a sore spot for them all season, as they converted 72% of their attempts. “I was really pleased with our effort tonight,” said FWBBC coach Nathan Willhite. “We came away from Thursday’s game feeling pretty good about our progress at this point in the season. Now, we just need to keep moving forward.” For the second consecutive game there were three Flames in double-figures. Wade led the way with 24 points and seven assists, Kevin Murray just missed a double-double with 21 points and nine rebounds, and David Landers was able to record a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Flames win brings their record to 5-14. They will host Trinity Baptist College on Thursday at 7:00pm. On a weather-related note, the Flames were unable to play Kentucky Christian University on Saturday due to snow. The game will be re-scheduled at a later date.
CROWN 81, FWBBC 77 Powell, TN January 29, 2010. The Tennessee weather wasn’t the only thing that went cold Friday night as the Flames suffered an 81-77 loss to Crown College. With eight minutes left in the first half, Kevin Murray hit a trey to put FWBBC up 21-20, but then the Flames couldn’t seem to find the basket as Crown went on a 23-6 run to take a 16 point half-time lead. As the teams traded buckets early in the second half, the Flames knew they had to turn up the heat defensively if they were going to win the game. So, they extended their two-three zone to put more pressure on the Royal Crusaders and it paid off as FWBBC was able to cut the lead to four with eight minutes left in the game. The game remained close the rest of the way and went down to the wire. With 12 seconds remaining, Murray knocked down his sixth 3-pointer of the game to bring the Flames to within three points at 80-77. Crown inbounded the ball, but turned it over, giving FWBBC one more opportunity. The Flames set up a play for Murray, but he missed a contested trey and Crown pulled down the rebound with 1.1 seconds left to seal the victory. "Coach Willhite and I were very pleased with the improvement we saw in our outside shooting tonight”, said Flames assistant, Jared Owen. “We are starting to put everything together. Hopefully we can continue to improve with 2 more games left on this road trip." Three Flames were in double figures led by Murray with 26, Brandon Wade with 22 and Chris Davenport with 15. Wade completed a double-double with ten rebounds. Aaron Pierce dished out seven assists for FWBBC.
SHEPARD FILM 90, FLAMES 78, 2OT January 26, 2010. Often a game can boil down to who makes free throws. Such was the case for the Flames Tuesday night as they lost a double overtime heartbreaker to Shepherd Film Acadamy 90-78. FWBBC shot a dismal 25% from the charity stripe and it ultimately cost them the game. The Flames took a ten point lead early in the game, but the Eagles clawed back and tied the game with five minutes left in the first half. The game went back and forth from there with the Flames taking a slim two point lead into the intermission. The second half was much the same as the first. Neither team was able to make any kind of a run to put the game away and with 2:45 left in regulation the game was all knotted up at 59. The Flames took a 63-61 lead with 1:06 left on a Brandon Wade layup. But Shepherd Film answered to tie the game with 15 seconds left. Both teams missed shots at the end of regulation, forcing overtime. The game continued to be a thriller in the first overtime with pressure defense and both teams making tough shots. With the game tied 71-71, the Eagles' Jamal Malone drained a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to hit the apparent game-winner. But, Flames' coach Nathan Willhite called time out and set up a full-court play. It worked to perfection as Kevin Murray threw a baseball pass to David Landers who hit a turn-around jumper from the top of the key and was fouled with no time showing on the clock. Landers went to the line, but was unable to complete the four-point play and the game continued. In the second overtime, the Eagles hit three quick buckets and FWBBC couldn't recover and Shepherd Film pulled away for the twelve point win. "We definitely had our chances," said Coach Willhite. "We need to handle pressure a little better and make our free throws. They have been our achilles heel all season." Leading the way for the Flames were three players with double-doubles: Brandon Wade finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds, Kevin Murray with 18 points and 14 rebounds, and David Landers with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Chris Davenport was also in double figures with 10 points. Landers led the Flames with five assists and five blocked shots. FWBBC falls to 4-13 on the season. They are on the road this weekend to play three NCCAA region games. Their next home game is scheduled for Thursday, February 4th. FLAMES 82, SHAWNEE BAPTIST 62 Louisville, KY January 24, 2010. The Flames completed a successful weekend trip to Louisville by defeating Shawnee Baptist College 82-62 on Saturday afternoon. FWBBC overcame their previous three games shooting woes, jumping out to an early lead and builting it to 15 by half-time. The second half was much the same and the Flames increased their lead to win going away. "It was a good weekend for us," said Coach Nathan Willhite. "We were able to gain some much needed confidence after playing three tough games right after the Christmas break." Leading the way for the Flames was Bradley Elkins with 18 points. Kevin Murray chipped in 15. Brandon Wade and David Landers dominated the boards, pulling down 11 apiece. Landers also had five blocked shots and Aaron Pierce dished out five assists for the Flames. The 4-12 Flames hope to make it three in a row as they host Shepherd Film College on Tuesday. Game time is set for 7:00pm. FWBBC 78, BOYCE 69, OT Louisville, KY January 22, 2010. Although they had a big lead, the Flames found out you can never take a team for granted and narrowly pulled out a 78-69 overtime win at Boyce College Friday night. The Flames were cruising along in the first half and took a 13 point lead into the locker room. They remained hot early in the second half by picking up two quick buckets to make it a 42-25 game. But, then the wheels seemed to fall off and Boyce began their comeback. The Bulldogs chipped away at the Flames lead and went ahead by two with just under a minute left in regulation. FWBBC took a shot to tie the game, but the shot bounced off the side of the rim. Boyce grabbed the rebound and was fouled with :07 remaining on the clock. But the Bulldog player missed both free throws. Brandon Wade, the quick Flames point guard, took the ball the length of the court and scored on a runner in the lane at the buzzer to tie the game at 63 all and send it into overtime. The Flames offense came alive again in overtime and outscored the Bulldogs by nine to secure the win. "We didn't stay as focused as I would have liked in the second half," said Coach Nathan Willhite. "But, I was really proud of the way the guys hung in there, even though momentum had gone against us." Brandon Wade had a huge offensive night for the Flames and finished with 30 points. Kevin Murray had his best outing of the season with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Wade and Aaron Pierce each dished out five assists. FWBBC is now 3-11 overall and 2-3 in regional play. FLAMES 53, OAKLAND CITY UNIVERSITY 94 Last weekend the Flames played two nationally ranked teams. Last night they hosted NCAA, Division II, Oakland City University, an athletic scholarship school. FWBBC coach Nathan Willhite knew it would be a tough game. He was right as the Flames fell 94-53 to the Mighty Oaks. For the second straight game, the Flames came out flat, missing their first eleven shots, allowing Oakland City to jump out to a 17-0 lead. FWBBC had their opportunities to score early on, but the ball couldn't seem to find the bottom of the net. "You won't win games if you can't shoot the ball," stated Coach Willhite. "Somehow we have to find a way to put the ball in the hole." Because of the slow start, OCU was able to maintain their lead and cruise to a 44-21 half-time advantage. In the second half, FWBBC shot a little better, but it wasn't enough as OCU pulled away for the victory. For the game, the Flames shot a dismal 27% from the field and 43% from the line. Rebounding also was a factor as the taller OCU dominated boards. Coming off the bench to lead the way for the Flames was newcomer Bradley Elkins who was five for eight from three point range and finished the game with 19 points. Kevin Murray and David Landers led FWBBC with six rebounds apiece. Now 2-11, the Flames look to get back on track as they travel to Louisville to play a pair of games this weekend against Boyce and Shawnee Baptist. The next home game for the Flames is next Tuesday, January 26. Tip-off is set for 7:00pm. FLAMES 69, OCU 92 December 12, 2009. The Flames drove 400 miles to Circleville, Ohio, to play the fourth-ranked (NCCAA Division II) Ohio Christian University Trailblazers. Due to sickness and family emergencies, they only had seven players available, and lost 92-69. Coach Nathan Willhite, speaking about his undermanned and undersized team, said, “I was happy with the effort, but we still have a lot of improvements to make.” Freshman Chris Clark led the Flames with 29 points and three assists. The team closed out the pre-Christmas portion of the season with a 2-9 record. FLAMES 43, RHODES COLLEGE 70 December 8, 2009. It was a tale of two halves for the Flames as they lost 70-43 to visiting Rhodes College. In the first half, despite shooting 31% from the field, they only trailed by eight at half-time. The Flames came out flat in the second half and shot 21% from the field (13% from three-point range), as the bigger Lynx dominated the boards and controlled the game. Matthew Wright came off the bench and led the Flames with 10 points. Marcus Moore had six rebounds and Chris Clark had four assists. Coach Nathan Willhite said: “We are not a very good shooting team right now. We need to do a better job running our offense.” FLAMES 97, BOYCE COLLEGE 82 December 4, 2009. The Flames picked up their second win of the season with a 97-82 victory over visiting Boyce College Bulldogs. FWBBC jumped out to an early lead, built a 49-34 half-time lead, and never looked back. David Landers led all scorers with 25 points. Chris Clark and Marcus Moore each scored 17; Kevin Murray had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
FLAMES 77, TOCCOA FALLS 79 November 7, 2009. The Flames played Toccoa Falls College on the second day of the ACC Classic. Down early and at halftime by as much as 16, the Flames came back to tie the game in the last two minutes. Toccoa hit two free throws with nine seconds, took the lead, and held on to win. Coach Nathan Willhite said, “The positive side is that we know we can come back when we are down. We must learn to play consistently for 40 minutes.” Flames Player of the Game: Chris Clark—24 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal. FLAMES 90, ATLANTA CHRISTIAN 110 November 6, 2009. The Flames traveled to Atlanta, GA, and competed in the ACC Charger Classic.
